King of 0-60 mph, Porsche 997 Turbo S Motor Trends fastest car for 2012

These guys test a lot of vehicles and were one of the first to put the Porsche 997 Turbo S through it’s paces. Their test vehicle blew through the 3 second mark and was quickly compared to the Bugatti Veyron when it came to launching from a dig!

The real mind blowing fact here folks is that not only is it the quickest from 0 to 100 kph but the Turbo S also sports the best fuel economy averaging  in at 20 mpg.

I don’t know if I agree with ‘scary as hell,’ but go on and lift mid-corner and all doubt will be erased from your mind as to exactly what sort of car you’re driving. That said, a kick of the throttle reels you back in via the grippy goodness of AWD.

As tested the Porsche Turbo S laid down a drag strip time of 10.9 seconds through a quarter mile at a speed of 127.4 mph, while the “slower” 2012 Nissan GT-R  came in at 11.1 seconds at 124.8 mph. The 2013 GT-R has shaved off a tenth, hitting 60 in 2.8 seconds. That made these two cars the third and fourth fastest cars they have ever tested (yup ever tested!) – first, still holding the record is the Bugatti being the Veyron.

This means that as far as production vehicles go, only the Veyron (and assuming the Veyron Super Sport) are any quicker than the mighty Porsche Turbo S.

The current standings, in order of performance:

10. 2013 BMW M5 – 3.7 seconds
9. 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster – 3.6 seconds
8. 2013 Audi S8 – 3.5 seconds
7. 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 – 3.5 seconds
6. 2013 SRT Viper GTS – 3.4 seconds
5. 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 – 3.4 seconds
4. 2012 McLaren MP4-12C – 2.9 seconds
3. 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition – 2.8 seconds
2. 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 – 2.8 seconds
1. 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S – 2.7 seconds

If you’re wondering, Motor Trend also tested a few SUV’s, with top earnings for the quickest 0-100 kph time going to the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, coming it at 4.3 seconds.

We have to say that the biggest surprise in the list is the Audi S8! 3.5 seconds to 100 for a luxury sedan – now that’s incredible pull.
